Workshops

There will be three intensive workshop sessions covering interesting and controversial topics:

  • Security vs. Usability?
  • The Pedagogy of eLearning: Emerging Issues
  • Next Generation Networks - Next Revenues?

Security vs. Usability?

Chairs: Steven Furnell and Harald Baier

Practical evidence suggests that these are often contradictory requirements. But do the issues have to be in competition? What approaches could solve the problem?

If it is to be effective and tolerable for its target audience, security needs to be realised and presented in a usable manner. Unfortunately, experience suggests that users can face difficulties when trying to perform security-related tasks, as well as in wider contexts when they find themselves encountering security during other activities. Problems can then range from the usability of related interfaces through to performance and productivity impacts arising from employing the technologies. The aim of the workshop is to expose some of the problems and consider steps that may help to address them.

Prof. Steven Furnell is the head of the Centre for Security, Communications and Network Research at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom, and an Adjunct Professor with Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. His interests include security management, computer crime, user authentication, and security usability. Steven Furnell is a UK representative in International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) working groups relating to Information Security Management (of which he is the current chair) and Information Security Education. He is the author of over 190 papers in refereed international journals and conference proceedings, as well as the books Cybercrime: Vandalizing the Information Society (2001) and Computer Insecurity: Risking the System (2005).

Prof. Harald Baier holds a professorship for internet security at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. His research interests cover malware detection and prevention, bot nets, security protocols and infrastructures, usability of security products, and cryptography based on elliptic curves. Harald Baier is involved in the Center for Advanced Security Research Darmstadt (CASED).

The Pedagogy of eLearning: Emerging Issues

Chairs: Steve Wheeler and Udo Bleimann

Technology is increasingly used to support, enhance and extend learning within a variety of education contexts. As a result, a number of technical, social, psychological, legal and operational issues are emerging. This workshop will focus on the extent to which new forms of learning and teaching are being introduced as a result of a varying number of influences. The workshop will also ask delegates to consider a number of related issues, including: the future roles of teachers, developers and designers; new technical architectures; new methods of course delivery; new copyright and intellectual property issues; new assessment methods; new learning environments; new digital literacies and skills learners will need to fully exploit new and emerging technologies.

Steve Wheeler is an Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) in education and Information Technology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Plymouth. He is responsible for convening the University's e-learning research network and co-ordinating technology mediated learning for the Faculty of Education. He serves on the editorial boards of nine international journals, including ALT-J, Digital Culture and Education, and IRRODL and is the Co-Editor of Interactive Learning Environments. Steve is also the chair of the UNESCO funded IFIP WG 3.6 (Distance Education) and a Fellow of the European Distance and E-learning Network (EDEN). His research interests include e-learning, distance education, creativity and Web 2.0 social software. His most recent books, The Digital Classroom (Routledge 2008) and Connected Minds, Emerging Cultures (Information Age, 2009) and many journal articles reflect his keen interest in social media and their potential to transform learning in all sectors of education. Steve's blog Learning with 'e's can be found at: http://steve-wheeler.blogspot.com

Prof. Udo Bleimann is the head of igdv-Center for Advanced Learning, Media and Simulation at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. In this role he is responsible for the learning and teaching strategy of the university. He is at the same time director of aiDa (Institute of Applied Informatics Darmstadt) and chairs the international and interdisciplinary learning research project "Atlantis University" involving many researchers out of seven disciplines and ten partners from all over the world. Udo Bleimann has published many papers and chaired many conferences. His main interests for the last years are the improvement of learning and teaching in the university sector using IT. Next Generation Networks - Next Revenues?

Chairs: Ulrich Trick and Bogdan Ghita

The development and operation of innovative ideas within Next Generation Networks will have a huge impact on our society. Furthermore, new applications with a dynamic deployment may support the rapid development of new services even better than before. Does this lead to new revenues as well?

Prof. Ulrich Trick is the head of the research group for telecommunication networks at Frankfurt/Main University of Applied Sciences. His interests include the topics "Next Generation Networks (NGN)", "Voice/Multimedia over IP", and "optimization of telecommunication networks". Ulrich Trick has published many papers, amongst others the NGN-book "SIP, TCP/IP and telecommunication networks, 4th edition". Until 2001 Prof. Trick led large R&D projects at different telecommunication vendors. Further information is available on his website http://www.e-technik.org.

Dr Bogdan Ghita is an Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) in networking at University of Plymouth and member of the Centre for Security, Communications and Network Research, currently leading the networking area. His research interests include network performance, security, and telecommunication services, with 21 journal and conference papers published in the mentioned areas. He was a member of the TPC for 28 international conference events (reviewer for a further 10 conferences) as well as reviewer for IEEE communications letters, computer communications, and future generation computer systems journals. He has been a member of the British Computer Society since 2005. He had successful past and ongoing research and development collaboration with France Telecom and Orange. He graduated two PhD students and 47 MSc students and is currently supervising nine PhD projects and six MSc projects in research areas linked to networking and telecommunication services.
